Reading is probably the first thing that I would recommend someone going through tough times, life sucks? Go read, relationship problems? Go read. Your neighbour’s aunt’s daughter’s barbie broke up with Ken? You should definitely start reading. Okay, enough. Jokes apart, it is one of my hobby that I am proud of. My journey to developing a habit of reading started from the point in my life where I felt the weakest, and so this is the reason I would say books helped me get on my feet again, and if I survived those horrible times, books are a major reason, and I am glad I picked books up because in return books picked me up and I learnt, as a person, how to deal with crisis, how to deal with negativity, usher aside hate and make way for self love. Today, as the pandemic, hate, trolling, bullying, disasters and negativity surrounds the world and of course your instagram feed and this current situation has affected every single person out here, I want you to know this one hobby, this one habit can help you bring a balance to your everyday life. So here we go, here are the books you should start with, especially if you are not an avid reader.

1. Ways To Live Forever by Sally Nicholas

This is the first novel I read till the end, although it’s been years, this book, the story still stays with me, it has been very beautifully written, debut novel of Sally Nicholas. It is about an 11 year old boy with cancer, life through his eyes, this novel carries the capacity to change your perspective, it really can affect your thought patterns for good.

2. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma

Robin Sharma, a well known author and motivational speaker, this book has to be in this list. It narrates the remarkable story of a lawyer, Julian Mantle, how he confronts the truth of his unfulfilling life and finds out valuable skills and lessons to transform his life. This one is a must read, there is a lot to learn, it is THE motivational manual you might be looking for.

3. Matilda by Roald Dahl

Yes. An old old children’s book, you probably would have seen the movie as well. Although it is a children’s book, you simple feel happy reading it. It is simple, creative, and entertaining, so pick it up, and you would not want to put it down until finished.

4. The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

Again, a very popular name, Paulo Coehlo, his books are always engrossing and makes your mind wander to places you never would have thought of. The Alchemist tells about a shephard named Santiago, he will take you to a journey you never could imagine, to a realization of the self, you will learn to think from a changed perspective.

5. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Okay, most of the people already have watched the film, but I want you to consider reading the book as well. The narrator, a 16 year old girl, who suffers from thyroid cancer, is forced by her parents to attend a support group where she meets Augustus Waters, a 17 year old boy. Their journey is full of happiness, heartache, hope, distraught, and will make you feel number of emotions as you go through each of it’s pages.

These are the five books I absolutely love and continue to admire, and probably re-read them. I am a great fan of fiction, and there are several reasons for you to become one too. This is a period of chaos, with the pandemic and the lockdown, we are spending a considerable amout of time at home, so this the best time to pick up a book and start flipping through pages and cultivate a habit. You will surely notice a change, because as you read, you learn, as you learn, you grow and as you grow, you know how to better deal with stuff.

Feel free to write to me regarding any suggestions and recommendations about books, I would love to know, and soon I’ll be back with more books.
